CLUB FOOTBALL: APPRECIATING THE GOALSCORERS

Looking at the top five leagues in the last century, there have been changes to the game. From football rules, to officiating, the ball, pitch innovations and financing. Below we consider the brilliant goalscorers that have contributed the most goals to club football.


Jamie Vardy’s 130 goal-contribution has helped push Leicester City to over 1448 goals in 997 games. He played a key role in their claiming a surprise Premier League title in 2016.

Sheffield United have been impressive this term in the English topflight, punching above their weight and seeking european invitation. They have 1449 goals in just over a thousand games.

Leeds United are back in the Premier League. Their rivalry with Manchester United used to epic, now they are back with Marcelo Bielsa gunning to make a name for himself other than the coaches’ coach.

Villareal used to be a powerhouse in Europe hence their 1493 goals in 1034 games. Juan Riquelme remains a legend. Former Arsenal, PSG and Sevilla manager has been reportedly contracted to join them this summer.

Monaco, Napoli, Marseille, Schalke, Werder Bremen goals’ record hovers around 1500 in about a thousand games. Lazio is up there with recent runs by Ciro Immobile.

Atletico Madrid have scored 1682 goals in 1074 games. Diego Simeone has done very well since taking over the reins in 2011. They have had several top strikers that have contributed to that tally, from Fernando Torres to Sergio Aguero, Diego Forlan, Radamel Falcao, Antoine Griezmann, Diego Costa etc.

AC Milan are top 20 courtesy of goals from Ukraine soccer legend Andriy Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi. Valencia have David Villa and Roberto Soldado. Villa moved to Barcelona where he impressed before going to become the Major League Soccer (MLS) best player in history in the United States.

Bayern Leverksen have had top scorers like Dimitar Berbatov while Borussia Dortmund’s record has contributions from Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and now Erling Haaland.

Sevilla, Tottenham, Inter Milan, AS Roma and Juventus are up there but they do not make the top ten. Lyon, Manchester City and PSG are top scoring teams this century.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal have had impressive strikers like Torres, Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard, Mo Salah, Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie.

Barcelona is the most scoring team this century courtesy of Lionel Messi. He has scored over 700 goals, helping them to over 2740 goals in less than 1200 games. Real Madrid follow with contributions from Cristiano Ronaldo, Raul and Benzema. Bayern Munich are grateful to Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribbery.
